Jake on Exercise for Kids

The vast majority of America's children are both inactive and unfit. Because of this fact, our children will face increased health care costs, reduced productivity in the workplace and a reduced quality of life.

Did you know that physically active children have fewer chronic health problems than kids who are not active? Are your children at risk? They probably are. According to a variety of health related statistics, America's youth is in danger. There is a rise in the number of obese children these days. As many as 40% of kids today have cardiac risk factors like obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and inactive lifestyles. The trouble can be traced right back to a lack of exercise.

Our children are our most precious assets. How can we sit by and do nothing when their health is at stake?

We don't - It's simple, help kids get fit. Get them involved in physical activity; Introduce them to exercises that are fun. Once your get kids moving in the direction of fitness, chances are they will keep going for the rest of their lives.

First, you begin by exposing them. Children want to be like their parents and copy what they do - that means you should get involved in physical activities and set an example for your kids. Concentrate on the positive aspects of exercise, like family participation, variety, freedom and fun. Try to avoid activities that promote competition, embarrassment, discipline and regimentation. Show kids that being active is fun. Hike, sled, walk, play games, skate, bicycle, dance, jump rope and participate in organized sports - instead of doing sit-ups or push-ups. Plan outings and activities that involve walking, like a trip to the zoo or the park.

Studies of adolescents find that 20 minutes of aerobic activity three times per week has significant positive effects on their health, and can help control depression and anxiety. Children involved in fitness related activities show a stronger self-image, along with more self-confidence, and they demonstrate greater improvement in skill and health related fitness.

Personal note:

As an overweight kid who stuttered, I was transformed by playing basketball and working out in the basement. I gave up my Twinkies and television for hoops and weights. As my muscles became bigger, my stutter became smaller. My confidence grew and my health habits changed for the rest of my life. There was a definite correlation among how I looked - how I felt about myself - and how the outside world perceived me.

I looked great and I felt great too!
